San José at GA227: Reflections from the Assembly
Following a meeting of the church’s national body, it can be easy to recount the General Assembly as a sequence of reports, amendments, and votes. Yet beneath each motion is a deeper act of discernment: a church seeking to remain faithful amid the fractures and weariness of the world. In that spirit, we give thanks for our San José representatives and for the broader community of faith whose shared work continues to reflect the hope of this year’s theme — “Persevering Toward Wholeness.”
For Teaching Elder Commissioner Deborah Troester, the experience was “intense but rewarding.” Serving with the Committee on Gender & Sexuality Justice, Deborah participated in conversations centered on belonging, care, and embodied dignity. Among the actions considered were support for a biennial gathering for LGBTQIA+ Presbyterians and an affirmation of access to medically necessary, evidence-based gender-affirming healthcare. Deborah noted that she was especially pleased to see the Assembly affirm “the right of all transgender people to receive appropriate medical care,” a reminder that Assembly work is never only procedural. It also shapes how people experience welcome, protection, and care within the body of Christ.
Beth Wylie served with the Committee on Racial Justice, where commissioners considered measures strengthening the denomination’s anti-racism work, including expanded training and deeper accountability around racial equity. The Assembly also debated language naming White Christian nationalism, ultimately affirming the importance of speaking clearly about ideologies that distort the gospel and threaten the dignity of God’s people. Deborah named the overwhelming passage of the Presbytery of San José’s overture condemning White Christian nationalism as a personal highlight, underscoring the significance of seeing a local witness carried into the discernment of the wider church.
Kemal Munkem served as a Young Adult Advisory Delegate with the Committee on Reformed Identity in the World, where conversations touched on theology, public witness, and the church’s responsibility in a changing world. The committee engaged matters related to White Christian nationalism, a proposed confession of faith, artificial intelligence, forced labor, migrant worker advocacy, and human rights in detention contexts. The Assembly declared White Christian nationalism and similar ideologies incompatible with the teachings of Jesus Christ, while also choosing to allow more time for churchwide study before sending a proposed confession to the presbyteries.
Beyond the business of the Assembly, Deborah also reflected on the gift of fellowship: meeting Presbyterians from across the country, reconnecting with old friends, and finding common ground with colleagues from both Northern and Southern California. She expressed gratitude for the leadership of outgoing moderators Rev. Tony Larsen and Rev. Cece Armstrong, as well as optimism for the newly elected moderators, Rev. Marta Pumroy-Cordero and Rev. Dr. Kristopher D. Schondelmeyer.
Through the presence of our San José representatives, GA227 reminds us that the work of the wider church is carried by people who come ready to learn, listen, collaborate, and vote on behalf of the communities that send them. Its agenda was wide-ranging, but its deeper work was rooted in perseverance: naming what must be confronted, allowing what still needs time, and seeking wholeness without pretending it comes easily. We give thanks for Deborah, Beth, Kemal, Neal, Grace, and all who helped carry this work on behalf of the church.
