MISSION ADVOCATE
The mission advocate is a part-time resource person, motivator, and facilitator for a variety of mission activities in the Presbytery and for the congregations. This person "advocates" for Presbyterian mission, initiates activities, engages others, shares ideas, and promotes available resources.
Qualifications:
- Member of a PCUSA congregation or presbyteryPassion for God's mission in the whole world Dedication to mutuality in mission Commitment to mission education Willingness to inform others about mission events, activities, and resources Written and oral communication
- Leadership experience in the Presbytery is helpful
Responsibilities:
- Serve as mission contact person for the Presbytery regarding Presbyterian mission. Promote an understanding of the PC(USA)'s participation in mission. Maintain communications with church mission committees. Encourage and assist congregational leaders in developing a plan and program for awareness of and commitment to Presbyterian mission, incorporating mission education into existing programs and services of the congregations.
- Challenge members of the congregations to become personally involved in mission through prayer, awareness, and sharing of gifts.
Duties:
- Obtain and be knowledgeable of PCUSA materials, news, and information. Including, but not limited to HORIZONS of the Presbyterian Women, Presbyterians Today, Info-Pak, the Mission Yearbook of Prayer, and the Presbyterian Planning Calendar.Prepare occasional newsletters updating Mission Chairs about new information, resources, and dates of coming missionaries. At least a 3 month notice needs to be given for congregations to accommodate a speaker comfortably. Give a report at Presbytery staff meeting.Convene Presbytery wide Mission meetings for training and meeting with missionaries.Present an educational display at Presbytery meeting including quantities of any free or inexpensive material that they might find helpful. Also be able to speak for 3 minutes before Presbytery if such a presentation would be desired.Work with congregational leaders to increase the congregation's financial commitment to Presbyterian mission.Develop congregational links with a PC (USA) mission workers through the distribution of the worker's newsletter, send letters of encouragement and support to the mission workers, and invite mission personnel to visit your Presbytery if they are to be on the west coast.
- Attend and encourage others to attend Presbyterian regional and national global mission events.
